In retrospect I’m not a little pleased that at Capital Eats I was the first to report on, what became, my favourite coffee shop Sharpfle Waffle.

Master Barista and owner James (Taehyun) Choi not only made excruciatingly delicious coffee but his waffles made with croissant dough were achieving cult status.

Then along came a legal dust-up with Stella Luna, a gelato shop that soon after had to close its own Wellington Street doors. As I was reminded, and excuse my language, but “Karma’s a bitch, but only when you are.”

Undeterred James re-opened Sharpfle Waffle on Hinchey Avenue in nearby Mechanicsburg and nestled in a residential neighbourhood, he now has a loyal local following with regulars from the past making frequent visits.

So when James asked if I wanted to give my thoughts on their new dinner menu, I put wings on and headed over.

Back on the Ottawa scene after his time in the kitchen at the world -famous Eleven Madison Park in New York, is chef and Sharpfle Waffle co-owner Jay Lee.
