Review: Chez Lam

Come for pho, stay for the imperial rolls at Vietnamese restaurant Chez Lam

A while back I was searching for a Vietnamese restaurant in Stittsville at which I'd had a very nice Lotus Salad when this restaurant in Kanata came up. It's a good distance from where I reside but it's fast becoming my go-to for very good Vietnamese food.

Few Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa offer proper imperial rolls (a mix of vegetables, pork and shrimp) but at Chez Lam, at 484 Hazeldean Rd., they come close to replicating the best versions that I enjoyed in Vancouver. These rolls are a good option for those with gluten sensitivities as they come deep-fried in a rice wrapper. In fact, all their rolls are well made, properly priced and delicious. One appetizer option that missed the mark a little was the deep-fried calamari that had just a bit too much chew.

But to the main event: All the soups at Chez Lam clearly have a deft and experienced hand at play. They contain much less MSG and are more fully flavoured than many other ho houses I've visited. The classic pho here is very good but I particularly enjoyed the mildly spicy sate beef noodle soup that warms without destroying your taste buds. Very fortifying.

This family-run business also offers a considerable variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options, sizzling dishes, vermicelli bowls that are colourful and fresh with perfectly grilled proteins, and a good selection of other noodle dishes that will have you craving more. It's an extensive menu. One caveat, I do love a good Pad Thai and although their version is made with an imported Thai paste, it was far too sweet for this palate.

Something I noticed on my first and every subsequent visit is the pride they take at Chez Lam in cleanliness. I honestly can't remember the last time I've been to one of these eateries and noticed that every nozzle on every sriracha and hoisin sauce bottle had been wiped sparkling clean. And this on every single visit. Walking to the washrooms I cast a glance into the kitchen and was impressed by how well they maintain their workspace. It's encouraging to see that a place I enjoy for the food is also getting it right in every other way.
