Run, don’t walk, To Ramen Isshin

The hype for Ramen Isshin is worth it at this outstanding ramen shop

Before Ramen Isshin opened at the end of February at 775 Bank St. in the Glebe, I would shop for their frozen ramen kits at T&T. There was a depth of flavour and umami goodness that approached the best of the better ramen shops in Vancouver but unfortunately those kits would often quickly sell out.

Then news came of their restaurant opening. I was there like a shot and I'm happy to report that Isshin satisfies those ramen cravings. I may still miss the clam broth versions offered by Ramen Man in Vancouver or the great Konjiki in Toronto but Ottawa is fortunate to have Isshin as it represents a move towards more competition and perhaps, eventually, even a clam-based ramen broth.

By all means, try the Spicy White Sesame Shio (salt) as a terrific example of how they get it right and both the Age Tofu and Tako Wasabi (a fiery raw octopus) are proper ways to start your meal. They also offer a dipping noodle dish served with a thicker, reduced broth known as Tsukemen. Vegetarians fear not — three very satisfying ramen bowls are on offer.
